A technical writer’s work isn’t exactly among the top ten most exciting jobs in the world, but it doesn’t mean that it’s all work and no play all the time. In fact, the best technical writing fields are usually those that are fun to write.

If you have a passion for writing and are looking for the best technical writing fields, your search has ended. This article contains the top three that have high scores both in the profit meter and fun meter!

1) Cars and Bikes

There’s just something about a shiny new car or bike that gets people’s hearts racing. This is a more specialized area of writing though and is less commonly found on the Internet compared to the field mentioned above.

However, there are magazines you can apply which specialize in such topics. Automobile shows, for example, also give you something to look forward to. As a technical writer, you are invited to these events regularly. You also get to see some of the rarest, fastest and most innovatively designed cars and bikes in your area.

2) Gizmos and Gadgets

One of the best technical writing fields today is that of gadgets. After all, we are in an age when almost everybody wants to know what the next model of Nokia or the next generation of iPods looks like. Technology is now considered sexy.

As a technical writer for gadgets, this frenzy is to your advantage. Reviews on the latest model of mini laptops are most definitely welcome. Articles comparing different brands of mobile phones are eagerly eaten up by the techno-savvy crowd. And don’t pretend like you don’t enjoy being a gadget guru either!

3) Computer Software

Computer software is also one of the best technical writing fields today. People have a constant need to upgrade their programs, and large and small companies are always ready to give them options.

As a technical writer, you get to sample these programs and review them either for a blog, Web site or magazine. You can even be assigned to create a how-to manual necessary for every computer software that comes out.

There are a lot of opportunities for technical writers to earn money in this day and age. Indeed, the best technical writing fields are often those that are most fun.

This review is based on the paperback edition of Anne Rice’s novel, ‘Christ the Lord Out of Egypt‘.

I must admit that as a past reader of Anne Rice vampire novels, I was prepared for a different experience than what I encountered by reading this book. My son gave me my first Anne Rice novel at Christmas a few years ago, and he followed up with more of her paperbacks on subsequent birthdays, Mothers’ Days, and Christmases.

Many of Anne Rice’s previous novels are dark, yet strongly compelling, reading. You might find your mind wandering as you wade through paragraph after paragraph of descriptive details that, while setting the scene, sometimes distract you from the storyline. However, her stories always seize your interest. You might skim over the flowery descriptions, but you are always entranced by the characters in their search for something bigger than themselves.

In this book Anne talks about something bigger than all of us – and succeeds in eliciting strong emotions accompanied by occasional tears. This is a simply written account, narrated from the point of view of a young Jesus.

Unlike earlier novels, she restricts the descriptive language to a level which accurately depicts the time, customs, and surroundings – without distracting from the story’s progression. The book has been carefully researched. Historical facts are intertwined with dialogue and narrative in a way that makes them come alive to the reader.

Young Jesus surprisingly commits a huge sin in the third paragraph of the first page. This startled me! My perspective of Jesus has always been one of God personified in the flesh – and God would never sin! That first page raised my hackles and I almost put the novel down in disgust.

However, it was a Christmas present from my son, and I felt compelled to read it for his sake. I certainly didn’t think that Anne Rice was going to tell a story about the Jesus Christ I knew from reading Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Without a doubt, I am overjoyed that I read the book right to the end. It cleared up a mystery that has plagued me for years: Why did Jesus have to die to save me? This answer had been given to me many times in sermons and in the Bible itself. However, I never completely understood it until I read this book.

Whatever you do – don’t skip to the end of the novel to discover the answer. Without absorbing the narrative, chapter by chapter, you will not comprehend the last two pages.

Anne has wavered from Roman Catholicism to atheism, and back to Roman Catholicism. She relates in the paperback edition why she made a promise to dedicate her life to God.

The introductory pages of the novel include a map showing the northern part of Egypt and the areas of the Holy Land that are mentioned in the story. The back of the book includes an ‘Author’s Note’ and ‘Note to the Paperback Edition’. Here, Anne describes a bit of her background, her research techniques, and her conversion back to Christianity.

No matter what your religious beliefs, you will find this novel an interesting read. I intend to buy several to give away to friends and relatives.

Christ the Lord Out of Egypt – by Anne Rice

Paperback Edition ISBN: 0-7704-3013-9

Hardcover Edition ISBN: 0-6769-7768-5

*Anne Rice has kindly provided the following thoughts on this review:

‘I do personally believe that Jesus was sinless, and in my novel the intention is to present Him as absolutely sinless. In the opening scenes He does not kill anyone. He ‘feels the power go out of Him’. Rather like the similar passage of the Gospel of Mark when the hemorrhaging woman is healed by touching His robe.

‘Take care and have a good year,

‘Anne Rice’

All of your life imaginary ideas have been floating around in your mind and one day you decide to unleash that creativity and write a book. What a wonderful thought. You go to the keyboard and put the first sentence onto a blank piece of paper. The first sentence soon becomes the first paragraph. The first paragraph turns into the first page in a short period of time. After that the first page becomes the first chapter. Several months later the first chapter turns into your first novel.

What a wonderful accomplishment! Congratulations! You feel as if you are the next literary heavyweight to explode onto the American market.

Not so fast. Let’s look at how the real world views your remarkable achievement.

If you’ve done your homework, then you know that the manuscript was written with twelve point New Times Roman type. The work is double-spaced. You’ve saved it on disc and probably printed it with the help of your desktop printer. Now what? After all, you feel as if this masterpiece is the next great piece of literary work in American culture.

Do you want to market the intellectual property? If so, how do you go about that? Virtually all literary agents and publishing houses will not accept unsolicited material. You ask what unsolicited material is and find out that it is a piece of literary work that does not have a referral source. In other words, you don’t know anybody that can get the finished piece of work through the front door. Now what?

You might ask around to see if you can get an intellectual property lawyer. What is that you ask? That would be a legal representative that can get the work copyrighted and protected from the people that you don’t know out there.

You may submit the piece to the Writers Guild and obtain a registration number. They accept downloads from personal computers and for a small fee can protect your work for a short period of time. But you wonder how that will help you. At least with a Writers Guild registration number the work is somewhat protected from anyone that might try to steal it.

However the question remains. How will either of those sources help to get you through a door? The only thing that I can suggest is that perhaps the intellectual property lawyer has some contacts in the literary agency field or the publishing business. After all, up to now the lawyer is the only live link into the industry.

But what happens if that fails? Then you might have to research self-publishing houses and self-publish your first novel. Things could be worse. There are many different packages available that range anywhere from around five hundred dollars up to twenty thousand dollars depending on what you want to try and accomplish and how extensive you would like to market the book.

If you choose to self-publish, then you’ll be able to decide whether or not you can design your own cover or pick from some of the generic ones that are offered. You’ll have an opportunity to pick the size type that you would like to use. Different formatting styles will be offered. Hardback and paperback editions will be offered.

But have you thought about proofing and copyediting? Will you have to rewrite the novel after it is looked at by an editor? What happens if someone that you have chosen to offer an opinion says that it is not worthy of being published in the shape that it is in? Your expenses will increase as the various jobs are performed.

Let’s assume that the manuscript needs some sprucing up and it is determined that you have to pay someone to read, review, and change the text. Is that an expense that you had budgeted into the project? The proofreader will need to be paid after the text is altered. After all the typos will need to be found and fixed; the sentence structure will need to be corrected. Did you plan on that expense as well? Now it is time to design your own cover. Did you leave enough money for a graphics design artist to assist you with that creative endeavor? You ask yourself if all of this is worth it.

Life is churning forward. You have written your first novel, but have finally admitted that writing the prose was the easiest part of the process. Not only that, but it is starting to get expensive and you still don’t have an agent or a publisher that is remotely interested in reading an unsolicited manuscript. You surge ahead because you want to show the world your wonderful achievement. Several expensive checks are written to the self-publisher, the editor, the proofreader, and the graphics design person.

Now what happens? The production people with the self-publisher carry out their duties. You become aware of all of the dates and deadlines for the production schedule. Final approval forms are signed. You wait your turn in line. Finally the date comes where the book is hot off the press and you are sent a hardback edition as well as a paperback edition. Finally, after all of the time that you have spent on this project you are a published author. Now what?

Have you thought about how you are going to tell the world that your masterpiece is completed? Have you budgeted dollars for marketing the creation? Have you thought about how the book was going to be distributed to book stores? What happens if it does get into the book stores but you find out that the world is not knocking the door down to buy the finished product? Have you decided to build a web site to not only market the book title but also the author’s name?

Now frustration sets in. Welcome to the world of unknown authors. You are not wanted by agents. Large publishing houses don’t want anything to do with you. The only people that really want to read your book are the small group of friends and relatives that are in your inner circle. You get discouraged. You throw in the towel. You’ve spent a ton of money and it has gotten you minimal results. What other suggestions are there?

As an author and publisher, I have attended a number of Internet chats in support of eBook and print book releases. Internet chats are largely informal, hosted either by the publisher or a third-party website (usually a site for book reviews), where authors and readers can interact, ask questions and have fun. Look around some of the popular book review websites, particularly those which focus on romance fiction, and you will find chats are scheduled almost daily. Some eBook publishers, for example, host regular monthly chats to keep readers up to date.

Whether or not the chats do anything to stimulate sales is up for debate. At best, most freeware chat rooms used by such sites can host a maximum of twenty to thirty people, and publishers often have to be wary to see if the majority of chatters are the authors. Personal experience has seen scheduled chats comprised mainly of authors, chatting with each other! While it is beneficial to offer these promotional opportunities, it hardly does a publisher good if readers do not come.

That said, incentives are usually offered to fill the chat rooms with readers. Authors may give away a prize to one lucky reader, like a small gift or a free book. The question of whether or not it is prudent to distribute complimentary books as prizes has long been argued among authors, particularly in the eBook industry.

Some authors condone the practice on the premise that a book in the hands of a reader may encourage that reader to buy more books. Especially if the book is part of a series, the reader may wish to collect the entire set. Using a book as the proverbial carrot, too, may guide readers to the author’s website, where they may find titles appealing enough to purchase. Also, an author seen as being so generous may develop a following in a faithful readership that will benefit them in the long run.

On the other hand, such generosity may backfire, according to other authors who condemn the practice. When you consider the tightly knit readership of eBooks, particularly in the romance genre, authors may tend to see the same Internet nicknames populating chats. If word gets around enough that free books are the prizes, an author might soon discover that he or she is giving away her entire catalog to the same readers without seeing any profits. An author can feel frustrated with the practice, and wonder if such regular contest winners will ever buy his/her book.

Of course, an author might feel obligated to give away something, and not upset the readers. Word of mouth is still the most effective method of promotion, and for an author to gain a reputation for being difficult or stingy can be damaging to future sales. Should an author feel trapped, however? The answer is an emphatic no.

There are ways to successfully offer giveaways without giving away everything. While gifts like soaps, teas, and other trinkets can add up over time (though they are tax-deductible, authors, make notes!), there is one giveaway trick that can help stimulate sales. The next time you participate in a chat, write a one to two-thousand word story that reads as a supplement to your novel.

It could be a sequel, a prequel, or a side story with supporting characters. Have it formatted as in eBook in HTML or PDF and offer it as an exclusive prize to one winner. The gesture may influence the winning reader to buy the corresponding book, and your other titles. As time goes on and you write more novels, you can offer these short tidbits to entice readers to sample your work, then buy! This way you are giving away a story, but not every story.

Give it a try, and watch your readership grow.

In a recent article, I stated: “I found that three or four pages of explanatory text usually are quite well received.” I also stated: “It may not be totally acceptable to a few readers, but overall, most will enjoy learning something new and, if the material is adequately condensed and included as part of the overall story, as it must be, it often is enjoyed enough to be favorably mentioned in reviews.”

If you are going to present a character that is unusual for any number of reasons, or provide circumstances that are different, you must be prepared to provide explanatory material. A tale involving a period of social upheaval will be little understood, if you do not offer some explanation why actions result in the reactions that occur. A story dealing with the period of the Industrial Revolution, for example, would be difficult in the extreme to tell without some recounting of the effect it had upon the gentry and their mores.

As another example, let us examine the introduction of a ‘different’ type of character. To do so, let me suggest a look at El Tigre.

Stories of immigrants to the United States have included those of Irish families escaping the potato famine, and Germans and French fleeing from religious persecution. They also have told of some English who came to America for the same reason, and of others to escape prison. The stories of Jewish, Chinese, and assorted others’ journey to this country have been set forth for numerous reasons, not the least of which was to discover gold. Stories of any of these characters, therefore, are not new and need no explanatory pages.

Johan Heinrich von Manfred, the man who becomes El Tigre, is different. He is of the Prussian Aristocratic class. Both his position and the circumstances of his entrance to school must be explained. An explanation of the weapons of the time also must be provided. It was an era when the sword and knife still were important weapons. Firearms were single shot muskets and pistols. When Johann finally obtains one of the first revolving weapons, a description of the unique difference is of great importance to the following episodes.

As the young man moves into Spain to fight in the 1st Carlist War, his activities are meaningless without an explanation of the political maneuvering that led up to the confrontation. Similarly, the story does not develop without the reasons being given for the precarious position of his mentor in Spain. When he moves on to America, an understanding of the often only alluded to basic problems leading to Texas’ fight for independence, adds immeasurably to the story line.

So, to reiterate, there are certain times when introduction of information drops are necessary to the story line, and with respect to this material “often being enjoyed enough to be favorably mentioned in reviews,” let me provide specific examples. I said that “it may not be totally compatible to a few readers.” An unsigned review for the Magazine of the Western Writers of America did not like the “huge information drops,” but admitted “the subject matter is intriguing” and that “(the book) is an interesting look at a type of immigrant not often written about.” However, all of the other reviewers either did not find the inclusion of the explanatory material in any way bothersome, or actually made a point of including favorable remarks about it. The review by the main book reviewer in the monthly Chronicle of the 80,000 member Single Action Shooting Society printed in its entirety on my web page, is a case in point. The 5 star review by Mel Kligman in Amazon, the review by the AC Peoples Media Co. Review Editor, Louise Harris, and the full review by the well-known Gun Columnist John Taffin provide similar endorsement of the inclusions.

The general consensus, therefore, certainly would seem to be in favor of including explanatory material if the author believes it is necessary to, or will enhance, the story line.
